Panspermie

Panspermie centres the composition on an abstracted figure set before a luminous planetary body. Brown, black and rose-coloured movements coalesce into an upright body whose contours dissolve at points back into the surrounding matter. The figure is not fully separate from its environment: it takes shape at the threshold between dark space and the bright circular field behind it.

Across the lower register, red, white and silvery-grey bands lie horizontally above one another. Their irregular edges and shifting widths create no stable ground, but a mobile foundation on which the figure asserts itself. Dark, near-circular marks articulate this field, guiding the eye through the composition in intervals. Above them, the planetary form opens into a luminous counter-space in which body and cosmic scale meet directly.

Panspermia offers the work a model of cosmic transmission: life need not be bound to a single place, but may traverse distance and remain active under altered conditions. In Marlon Nikolai’s practice, this proposition expands into a question of Cosmos, Matter & Relations: how can matter give rise to a living form that not only inhabits its surroundings, but perceives them?

The abstracted figure embodies this transition. It stands neither unequivocally before the planet nor entirely outside it, but seems to form within its material and energetic field. Body and environment remain permeable to one another. Consciousness appears not as an isolated interior realm, but as something arising at the threshold where matter, body and world enter into a perceptible relation. In this way, Panspermie leads directly into the Fields of Experience: the work asks how cosmic matter, taking embodied form, comes to perceive both itself and its surroundings.
