Research

Selected aspects of the hidden are translated into experience.

Artistic research examines the conditions under which selected aspects of the hidden can become perceptible and experiential. Its central fields are perception and sensory channels, information and relation, image and material, light and darkness, waves, frequencies and resonance, as well as spatial and bodily experience.

Artistic Position

Marlon Nikolai's artistic research understands the hidden as an open, multidimensional field of what has not yet become conscious, sensorially accessible, sufficiently differentiated, articulated or materially manifest. Art functions as both threshold and process of translation: selected aspects gain concrete experiential presence through pictorial, material, optical, spatial and bodily decisions.

The works do not offer a fixed decoding. Meaning emerges relationally between underlying structure, work, situation and viewers.

Not everything that is present is already experiential. Art begins at this threshold. — Marlon Nikolai
