Himmelsviereck frames the boundless as an image within an image. A dark frame cuts a luminous, clouded expanse of sky from the green ground. A small reversal arrow is set into its right side, making orientation part of the work. Read vertically, the composition moves through height and descent; when rotated, it produces a horizon and lateral extension. Above and below emerge as consequences of the viewer’s position.
A red line runs before the painted depth of the sky. A fine trace passes into a heavily raised, knotted concentration of material. Depending on the direction of reading, the line seems to enter this density or emerge from it. Beginning and end remain reversible, while its gradual thinning in and out suggests a tension extending beyond the visible section. The physical proximity of the paint meets the optical distance of the clouds: the line draws the sky taut against the surface of the canvas. As a recurring element in Marlon Nikolai’s visual vocabulary, it connects thread, seam and directed tension. Rotation changes its function—a vertical can become a horizon, concentration can become dissolution.
Beyond the frame, white lines turn the green ground into a field of movement. Fine, web-like traces overlap with broad arcs, loops and more forceful white marks. In the narrow zone beside the field of sky, they condense into a compact, rapid gesture; beneath the frame, they open into expansive circuits. In Umna Ciya Tan, related lines run across the arms of a figure. Here the body is absent, while its movement persists as a spatial structure. A body-bound marking becomes a field in which recurrence, interval and superimposition can be read as wave, frequency and resonance.
The work interweaves three scales: the near-limitless distance of the sky, the material proximity of the red trace and the movement of the white lines across the surface. With each rotation, the reversal arrow rearranges their relationship. Materially, the image remains unchanged while direction, progression and meaning alter their order. Himmelsviereck makes this interval between pictorial fact and perception-dependent reading its subject.
