Das kleine Gefäß approaches consciousness through the image of a vessel: a finite structure capable of containing an inner space that seems to exceed its own boundaries.
The vessel remains deliberately undefined. It can be understood as the body, the mind, or even a universe in itself — a temporary container for perception, memory, experience and thought. This relationship between limitation and expansiveness is reflected in the painting itself. Dense fields of colour, lines, gestures and fragments accumulate across the surface, intersecting and reorganising into a space that appears simultaneously contained and continuously extending.
The title introduces a deliberate contradiction. The vessel may be small; what unfolds within it does not have to be. The painting’s visual density suggests an interior filled with information and experience, while openings and transitions within the composition resist complete closure.
At the centre of the work is the idea that a vessel must be emptied in order to be filled anew. Against the abundance of the painted surface, emptiness becomes significant precisely because it is largely absent. It represents the possibility of releasing accumulated structures so that perception can reorganise and something not yet formed can enter.
Within Marlon Nikolai’s practice, this movement between the contained and the boundless, the visible and what has yet to become perceptible, is fundamental. Das kleine Gefäß becomes both image and proposition: a finite space in which consciousness can accumulate, release, transform and expand
