Aero emerged in relation to a neoclassical piano composition by Roman Nagel, translating a musical experience into colour, gesture and pictorial movement.
Rather than illustrating the composition, the painting responds to its shifts between stillness and motion. Expansive passages of blue encounter softer fields of white, while denser gestures interrupt and redirect the composition. Forms gather, overlap and dissolve again, creating a pictorial space that oscillates between material presence and atmospheric openness.
This translation between different modes of perception is central to Marlon Nikolai’s practice. In Aero, sound is not represented as a subject; it becomes an impulse through which another sensory experience takes material form. Rhythm becomes movement, tonal relationships become colour, and the temporal experience of music is condensed into the simultaneous space of the painting.
The resulting image retains something of this origin without becoming dependent on it. Aero can be encountered between sound and image, movement and stillness, density and openness — as the material trace of an experience that has passed from one perceptual form into another.
