Untitled “O”

Untitled O emerged from an intuitive process in which the image was not predetermined, but gradually discovered through painting. Layers of blue, white and intermittent traces of warmer colour accumulate across the surface, recording decisions, revisions and movements without resolving them into a fixed representation.

This way of working is central to Marlon Nikolai’s practice: painting becomes a means of approaching something that is present before it can be clearly named or understood. Rather than illustrating such a state, the work gives it a material and perceptual form. Gesture, colour and overlapping layers become traces of a process in which something initially indistinct begins to enter experience.

The painting deliberately resists a stable foreground, horizon or centre. Depending on distance and attention, passages can suggest atmosphere, depth or fleeting spatial formations before dissolving again into paint. What appears coherent from one position may become fragmented from another.

In this sense, Untitled O is less concerned with depicting a particular place than with the moment in which perception begins to form one. The work remains open enough for recognition and uncertainty to coexist — allowing the viewer to encounter the image as an evolving field rather than a completed statement.
