Tulp Fiction takes its point of departure from Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The title forms a hinge between the canonical group portrait and the language of popular culture, bringing different histories of staging, observation and representation into contact.
Rembrandt’s painting presents anatomical knowledge as both scientific inquiry and public event. The body is examined, but the arrangement of gestures and gazes also distributes attention and authority across the image. Tulp Fiction returns to this constructed act of looking rather than simply reproducing the historical scene.
The reference allows the work to consider how images move through time: retained in cultural memory, displaced into new contexts and made available for another form of examination. Art and science meet here not as illustration and subject, but as related ways of organising attention.
