Polarität develops opposition not from two separate halves of the image, but through a continuous transition. The field moves from an almost light-absorbing black towards a lighter, metallic-seeming grey. Darkness and brightness therefore appear not as fixed poles, but as conditions that produce and alter one another.

On the darker side, the work’s title emerges in a bright, directly drawn line. Beneath it, incised and gridded traces condense into a narrow vertical structure. Comparable inscriptions remain present in the lighter field, yet recede against sheen, texture and tonal value. The same trace can become visible or nearly disappear, depending on its material surroundings and the attention of the viewer.

Polarität therefore denotes neither a moral nor an emotional classification. The work investigates how difference becomes perceptible at all: through the relation between pigment and ground, light and absorption, sign and surface. What appears as opposition arises within a shared field.
