Photokeratitis auf Palawan closes the series Hermetische Inseln der Glückseligkeit. Its title names an injury caused by excessive exposure to light. Within a series concerned with concentrated moments of happiness, that physical condition introduces a limit: radiance can attract, illuminate and overwhelm at the same time.
The work approaches freedom through this ambivalence. Release from familiar structures can open an unfamiliar horizon, yet the loss of every point of attachment may also become disorientation. What promises clarity can temporarily impair vision.
Palawan remains less a depicted place than an intensified state of perception. The painting holds fascination and caution together, asking how close one can move towards an image, an idea or a desired condition before its brightness begins to obscure everything around it.
