Aether

Aether gathers several histories of a substance that cannot be securely located. In classical thought, aether was imagined as a fifth element; in mythology, it named the luminous upper air. Later theories proposed it as the invisible medium through which light might travel, while ether also entered the body as an anaesthetic.

The work does not attempt to reconcile these meanings. It uses their proximity to approach a condition between material presence and disappearance: something imagined to carry light, consciousness or sensation precisely because it cannot be held in view.

Acrylic and spray paint form an atmospheric space without a stable horizon. Colour appears to move between density and suspension, allowing the painting to remain both physical surface and suggestion of an elusive medium beyond it.
