Horoskop

Horoskop belongs to the Skopein group of works, in which Marlon Nikolai examines different forms and conditions of looking. Here, the gaze turns both outward and inward: towards the orders that surround the human being, and towards the consciousness through which they become perceptible.

Across the lightly primed wooden ground, charcoal lines construct grids, coordinates and diagrammatic fields. Cropped arcs and a tilted, coloured spatial construction interweave different systems of observation and measurement. At their centre appears a suggested, abstracted human figure. Its inward-turned posture introduces a physical and mental point of reference into the constructed field of lines.

Microcosm and macrocosm do not form separate orders here. The figure does not observe the surrounding structures from outside, but remains embedded in their lines, rhythms and spatial displacements. What appears on the larger scale as a constellation may recur on the smaller as a physical, psychological or material structure.

The title refers to the attempt to read such correspondences. Signs and codes do not appear as arbitrary projections, but as possible vehicles of insight, disclosed through the interaction of observation, knowledge and intuition. Horoskop thus makes the human being both the reader and a constituent of the order they seek to understand.
