Selbsterkenntnis im Sonnenblumenfeld presents a frontally oriented head whose face is modelled like a chrome surface. Light, dark and coloured passages divide its features into fields of reflection. The figure does not stand in front of the sunflower field but appears optically embedded within it: yellow, green, blue and black surround the head, enter its contours and return across the face as fractured colour values.

Sunflower and chrome belong to Marlon Nikolai’s recurring visual vocabulary. The sunflower carries a real history of orientation toward light: while growing, it follows the course of the sun; as it matures, this movement stabilises into a fixed direction. It thus becomes an image of perception that first adjusts itself searchingly toward an external source of light and gradually derives orientation from it.

The painted chrome effect introduces a second relationship to light. In specular reflection, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. On a curved surface, however, the surface orientation changes from point to point. What becomes visible therefore depends on the particular relation between light, body and viewing position. The chrome-like face possesses no appearance independent of its surroundings: it receives external colours, reorganises them and returns them in altered form.

The title therefore does not describe self-knowledge as completed introspection. The figure does not recognise itself by withdrawing from the world, but becomes visible through its relationship with it. Sunflower and chrome embody two connected movements: orientation toward light and its return as reflection. Self-knowledge appears as a feedback loop between world and perception — between what strikes a body and the image that returns from this encounter.
