Schlange im Sonnenblumenfeld brings together two recurring figures within Marlon Nikolai’s visual vocabulary: the snake as a figure of transformation, renewal and cyclical movement, and the sunflower as an orientation toward light.
The snake moves through the composition without settling into a single spatial order. Its body coils, extends and changes direction, connecting darker, densely worked passages with an expansive field of yellow. Small sunflower-like forms punctuate the surrounding space, establishing a rhythm that contrasts with the continuous movement of the serpent.
Rather than constructing a fixed symbolic narrative, the painting allows these elements to operate as perceptual and associative forces. Transformation and orientation, darkness and light, contraction and expansion coexist within the same pictorial field.
The work belongs to an ongoing exploration of how inner states and structures that are not immediately accessible can acquire material form. Here, the snake’s movement becomes both physical and pictorial: a passage through different states of density, direction and visibility, while the sunflower introduces the possibility of orientation within that movement.
