Working in the former tennis hall in Remscheid
STUDIO · REMSCHEID

A space that lives with the work.

Since 2023, Marlon Nikolai has worked in a former tennis hall in Remscheid. The hall is both a space of production and thought: built for long processes, large-scale painting and spatial work, as well as concentration, retreat and daily continuation.

ROOMS OF PRACTICE

The rooms changed. The attitude did not.

The studio is neither a finished backdrop nor a status symbol. It emerges wherever work begins. Each room offered different conditions, resistance and possibilities; the practice inhabits them without becoming dependent on them. What remains is a way of developing images physically, inquisitively and without premature closure.

The room did not become a prerequisite for the work; it became a studio through the work.

Scale becomes physical: between distance and proximity, expansive gesture and concentrated detail.

PRESENT

Scale as physical experience.

The hall allows a work to become larger than one’s own body. Painting happens on ladders, at a distance and in immediate proximity. Expansive gestures meet concentrated details; material is carried, layered, sanded and repeatedly reconsidered.

At the same time, the studio remains a protected field. Life and work, memory and imagination meet here without being fully separated. The space is adventurous and sheltered at once—not a showroom, but an ongoing condition.

HORIZON

The Studio as an Open Field of Experience.

For Marlon Nikolai, the studio is more than a fixed place of production. It is an evolving space in which painting, sculpture, material research and spatial thinking intersect. Its form changes with the work – from a concentrated place of retreat to an open field for large-scale production, exchange and shared experience. In the long term, this practice follows the idea of a place where art does not emerge in isolation, but enters into dialogue with architecture, landscape, light, sound and encounter. What matters is not primarily the size or location of a space, but its capacity to open perception and move people.

ACCESS

A place of production—with selected openings.

The studio is first and foremost a place of production and concentration. Visits, conversations and access take place deliberately and by appointment. Selected formats may open the space temporarily without compromising its focus.
