Layering

Vielschichtige abstrakte Malerei mit weißen Gesten, tiefem Blau, Magenta und leuchtendem Gelb

Layering produces temporal and spatial depth, superimposition, concealment, partial access and the gradual emergence of form. Each layer adds a new state while altering the visibility and relation of what came before.

Earlier gestures, pigments, traces or material conditions may remain present beneath later layers. They can appear clearly, become fragmentary or withdraw almost completely. The work therefore does not replace one state with another; it holds several moments in a changing structure of accessibility.

Opacity, translucency and transparency organise different degrees of visibility. Layering can generate actual material depth as well as optical depth, allowing surface and interior, present and past, clarity and concealment to remain in tension.

Layering is consequently not simple accumulation. It is a method of relation and transformation: elements are preserved and changed at once, and meaning emerges through overlap, interruption, repetition and the conditions under which individual layers can be perceived.
